Harlem is really two HVAC problems in one neighborhood. The rowhouses need a system that fits where there is no room for ductwork. The pre-war apartment buildings on the avenues need through-wall equipment for openings that already exist.
How we work: we supply the equipment and handle delivery. We do not install, and we do not send crews. Your contractor does the install, and we will brief them on the fit before anything ships. What we bring is sourcing, including sizes no manufacturer builds for anymore.
Two very different building types
The rowhouses and brownstones off the avenues are the harder problem. Original plaster, narrow stairs, floor-through layouts, and no chase anywhere for conventional ducting. Running standard supply trunks through one of these means dropping ceilings or losing closets on every floor, which is why so many owners give up and put window units back in.
The apartment buildings on Lenox, Adam Clayton Powell, and Frederick Douglass are a different story. Pre-war and post-war stock, many with existing through-wall sleeves, and the same whole-line replacement dynamic you see in the Bronx.
Harlem also has several designated historic districts, including Mount Morris Park and Hamilton Heights. In those, exterior changes are constrained, which pushes you toward solutions that do not alter the facade.
The problem we get called about
For rowhouses, it is duct space. High-velocity small-duct systems exist precisely for this: the supply runs are small enough to snake through existing wall cavities without gutting the interior. That is the honest answer for a landmarked brownstone where you cannot touch the facade and do not want to lose ceiling height.
For the apartment buildings, it is the same story as everywhere else in the city right now. R-410A is gone, Aerosys is gone, AboveAir has left the market, and the 36 by 19 opening has no catalog answer.
