The area also carries significant institutional and former medical property, some of it converted to residential. Converted institutional buildings tend to have mechanical systems designed for a completely different use, and the through-wall openings, where they exist, are frequently non-standard.
The residential stock itself is mixed: some pre-war, some post-war, and some conversion, on adjacent blocks.
How buying actually works here
Individual buildings and individual approvals, with the added step that anything altering the exterior appearance needs to clear both your board and potentially Landmarks. That sequencing decision comes before equipment selection, not after.
The practical path is almost always a same-size replacement into the existing opening behind the existing grille. We supply the equipment and ship it; your contractor installs, and your architect handles anything that touches the facade.
If the existing units are a discontinued brand
Several manufacturers have left the through-the-wall market. Aerosys closed permanently, and AboveAir moved to other product lines. If your building runs either, find the model in the Aerosys cross-reference or the AboveAir cross-reference. For the 36" x 19" opening nobody serves anymore, we have a custom R-454B unit built to order.
